Remember, this Saturday 16th May, 1.45pm, No Reglada Demonstration,
oragnised by CCOO and open to all workers in the 'No Reglada' sector.

We return to the Jardinets de Gràcia to demonstrate in defence of better working conditions, permanent contracts, a healthy working week, salary scales and a quality conveni.

There'll be live music, samba, blugreass and DJ set, plus kids' activities.
Bring colleagues, friends, family and food to share!

Wednesday 13th May Outside "La Patronal"

Today members of the Bonanova comité were out in force supporting the CCOO in their negociations with the Patronal.

In the picture on the right you can see the rather long banner held up outside the Patronal this morning.

"We Exist, We Resist" the banner says in many different languages such as English, Catalan, Spanish, French, Arabic. The list is endless.

On Saturday there is another demonstration, quite like the one held on 28th March, which was very successful.

CCOO calls on all workers in the 'No Reglada' sector to the No Reglada Demonstration, Saturday 16th May, 1.45pm.

We return to the Jardinets de Gràcia to raise the profile of our sector and demonstrate to defend our demands for quality working conditions and collective agreement for No Reglada.

We demand a quality conveni, salary scales now!, permanent contracts and a sane working week!

We demand an end to job insecurity, contractual and social security fraud and the denial of our legal rights!

Saturday March 28th



Saturday 28th turned out to be a wet and rainy day. Not the sunny day to enjoy the demonstration but rather miserable and wet. Plan B, the wet weather plan had to be put into place. Firstly, because of the rain there was no electricity which meant that Mark Dix couldn't play and Kevins band "The Smokey Mountain Convenio Boys " would have to play acoustically...There was no shelter, so all the planned kids activities, flower making, a graffiti wall and facepainting, had to be put off and the food?? the botiferrada definitely no, but the picnic and the rest??? The only certainty was the march which would still go ahead despite the rain.. The banners we had worked together on earlier were put up around the Jardinets and by 2pm there was a big crowd considering the weather.

Local TV were there filming interviews with Steve (the Demo's main organiser) and Radio news stations had been calling all morning...CCOO were joined by UGT and a youth "samba" band turned up to play as we marched. When they started bangin those drums everybody started to get into a festive mood...and so we marched. The police were there to stop the traffic and we set off down Diagonal carrying banners and placards and blowing whistles to "make some noise". We turned the corner at Roger d'Lluria to stop outside the offices of the patronales for a speech and some symbolic tree planting. "Plant a quality convenio- Quality teaching = Quality teaching conditions". A tree was chained to the gate outside the entrance to the building and we planted placards with slogans all around. Then it was time for a quick photo call before we started to make our way back to the Jardinets. ...... After we had returned kevin's brilliant "Smokey Mountain" band played and people shared food. Prizes were given out...congratulations to John who won a bottle of wine for his sublime carrot cake...and a good time was had by all. A special thanks to all those from Bonanova who came down to join in and offer their support and if you couldn't make it, hopefully there will be more events in the future that will be in the sun! Demonstration: 28.3.09: Preparation of banners.

In the above photos staff reps from various language schools in Barcelona are preparing banners for the upcoming demonstration. The staff reps are from the Bonanova centre (you can see Sue in the photo!), UAB and the American Institute. The man in the white T-shirt is Mark Rumboldt. He works for the CCOO, the trade union that represents British Council workers.

Why a demonstration, you may ask? At the moment the terms and conditions of language school workers are being renegociated, and as a result our rights as workers are effected. So we need to show that we are prepared to defend those rights.

The demonstration is on March 28th. We will congregate at 1.30 pm. The demonstration will end at 3pm. Afterwards, there will be food and drink, some activities for kids (any volunteers welcome!) and possibly, a DJ!

We will start at Passeig de Gracia with Avenida Diagonal, go up Roger de Lluría (where we will make a whole load of noise outside the Patronal-the place where the negociations take place) and then end up back at Passeig de Gracia.

Not only will the demonstration give us a chance to speak together as a group of workers, but we will also have the chance to meet others who work in similar conditions and share viewpoints and experiences. It will raise our visability and awareness as a collective and manifest the importance of quality teaching in the private sector.

Bring friends, family, pets, a beer. Whatever you want! Just make sure you’re there and that you have your say!
